The Season Opens

2026–27·Storm days·The solar cycle·The next 48 hours—September 2026
Scroll

True darkness is back at the latitudes this book is about. Before the first nights, the archive’s own numbers: how strong the sky has been over the last twelve months, this year beside the last two, where the solar cycle is — and what the next 48 hours say.

Every figure names its source and its window, and the year still running is marked provisional, because it is. Kp is one number for the whole planet: a storm day is a day the sky was active enough somewhere under the auroral oval — you still need a dark, clear sky of your own. Between the numbers, frames from the last three springs in Lofoten, each with the archive’s Kp for the hour it was made.

One of those 9 days at Kp 7+ was 22 March 2026. At Lilleeid, the headland at Gravdal, this frame was made at 18:41 — in civil twilight, through cloud, on a phone. The archive files that hour at Kp 7, the strongest behind any frame the book has verified.

Per-year counts from the GFZ record (94 years, since 1932); each day counts once, at its strongest class. The last Kp 9 in the whole archive fell on 11 May 2024.

2025 was the busiest of the three, with 97 storm days. The frames from those springs were made in quieter hours: the archive files Storvatnet, 31 March 2024, at Kp 1, and Skagsanden, 23 March 2025, at Kp 2 — neither of them a storm.

The nights are back. The numbers are in.
The rest is the sky.

Kp says how stirred the whole planet was; it does not say whether your sky is dark or clear. The live page reads both for tonight, the season page marks the dark, moonless weeks, and the archive keeps every figure here current — this note was written with them in September 2026.
