Northern lights in Lofoten tonight

One regional call for the islands — live Kp, tonight's dark window, the oval, the cloud — and the thirteen places the book was made at, west to east along the E10, each with its own page, its own photograph and its own "where to look".

Reading the field under the auroral oval…

How it works

A magnetometer measures the Earth’s magnetic field. When a substorm surges the electric current that runs about 100 km up along the auroral oval, the field on the ground beneath it drops by hundreds of nanotesla (nT) within minutes — the sharp dip a magnetogram shows.

This reads the nearest of the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s eight magnetometers, Kilpisjärvi, against its own last 24 hours: 150 nT either way is active, a 300 nT drop a substorm, 600 a strong one. It measures the sky over the station — up to about 300 km away it still speaks for yours — and says nothing about cloud. Kp and Hp30 are planetary; this is local, and minutes old.

Darkness (astronomical, −18°) and the moon are astronomy — exact for all seven nights. Kp is NOAA's forecast peak over each dark window and cloud is Open-Meteo's mean; both reach about three nights out (2 of 7 here), the rest read “—”. Kp 1+ is this spot's own horizon threshold. Questions people ask

Can you see the northern lights in Lofoten?

Yes. From a dark site you need about Kp 1 for a faint glow on the northern horizon and roughly Kp 3 for aurora overhead. Lofoten sits at about 65° geomagnetic latitude — deep under the oval — but it is cloud-prone: the sky, not the Kp, is the usual limit.

Which Lofoten village is best for the aurora?

The forecast is the same for all thirteen; they differ by view and shelter. Reine and Hamnøy give the iconic peaks-and-water foregrounds; Skagsanden, Unstad and Lilleeid open to the sea for a wide horizon; Sørvågen and Storvatnet are the quiet, dark ones. Each place's page says where to face.

When is the best time?

The season runs late September to late March, when the nights are long and dark; the clearest dark months in the ten-year cloud record are on the strip above. You also need a low moon — the season sheet lists the dark, moonless weeks.
