One Week, Four Villages

Elgsnes·Valberg·Henningsvær·Unstad—March 2017 & 2019
Scroll

One late-March week in 2017, in date order. Elgsnes on the 24th under a sky the archive files at Kp 0.33 — almost nothing. Valberg on the 28th at Kp 3. Henningsvær on the 31st at Kp 4.33, the strongest night of the week. Then the same road two years later: Unstad, 26 March 2019, Kp 2.33.

Four nights, four values from the archive — and a frame on every one of them. Kp says how much the whole planet was stirred; the road, the shelter and which way you face decide the rest. Each chapter is the frame the file itself confirms, the Kp of that exact hour, and the book’s own note on where to stand.

The road’s end, and almost nothing.

The headland north of Harstad — drive the Fv2 to its very end. Little traffic, a broad, low northern horizon.

From the open ground at the road's end, face north over Vågsfjorden with distant town lights below. Foreground: the fjord and the light on the water.

A small village on Lofoten's south shore on the Fv815 — the book's highest local success rate.

Park near the church and watch from the beach in front: face north over the water, the church silhouette to one side. Foreground: the beach and shore lights.

The northern lights over Henningsvær

The fishing town on the south of Austvågøya — its famous football pitch and skerries.

The Fv816 spur down to the town is narrow and one-way — use the marked lay-bys and face north over the water. Foreground: the football pitch and skerries. Town light is close, so a stronger night reads best.

A surf beach frequented year-round — it opens to the open sea, so a wide, dark horizon.

The beach opens north-west to the open sea. Face north to north-west; the bowl of peaks around the bay frames the arc. Foreground: the sand and the breakers on the shore.

A quiet night, the week’s peak,
and a middling one two years on.

0.33, 3, 4.33, 2.33 — one number for each night, and none of them a promise. A quiet Kp gave a frame; the week’s peak gave another; two years and one island later, a middling night gave a third. The sky is the same everywhere on a given night. What the book keeps is where you were standing when it happened, and which way you were facing.
