Travel notes and tips.
With the means available to us today, journeys that once seemed impossible under ordinary circumstances are now within almost anyone's reach.
Money plays an important part in making these trips happen — but the right information and timing carry just as much weight.
Just as a holiday on a scorching summer's day asks you to guard against sunstroke, dress sensibly, avoid driving tired, and watch the state of the road, a journey into the winter cold has its own points to keep in mind.
My travels have had a great deal in common, yet they've also handed me wildly different days. The hardest was my very first, to Lapland. How to get there, where to stay, what to wear, what to eat and drink, whether the driving would be hard — I asked myself all of it, and looked the answers up online before setting off. A good deal of what I thought I knew turned out, over the course of my trips, to be wrong.
What matters is knowing in advance the difficulties you might run into — and, more than that, meeting them without panic, sure of what to do and in a positive frame of mind. Before you set foot somewhere unfamiliar, make certain you've done the necessary research and that you're carrying the right, sufficient equipment.
In the rest of this book you'll find my thoughts and cautions on transport, lodging, clothing, food, and more.
